Application of Near Critical/Supercritical Solvent Cleaning Processes

چکیده

Carbon dioxide can be used in its liquid (near critical) or supercritical fluid state as a replacement for conventional cleaning solvents, reducing the pollution associated with the operations that would otherwise require significant amounts of volatile organic compounds, ozone depleting substances, or hazardous air pollutants. The results of several near critical/supercritical parts cleaning and treatment studies performed at the Applied Research Laboratory are discussed. Near critical/supercritical processing is a commercially viable process for many industrial, electronic and medical device cleaning applications. This applications note will focus on industrial applications such as oxygen-service pressure gauges, fuel and transmission oil filters, and bearings.

Precision Surface Cleaning with Supercritical Carbon Dioxide: Issues, Experience, and Prospects

anufacturing industries have traditionally relied on chloM rofluorocarbons (CFCs) and other halogenated solvents for precision cleaning of metals, plastics, composites, ceramics, electronic components, and other materials. In 1991, for example, the Environmental Protection Agency estimated that approximately 170 million pounds of CFC-113 and methyl chloroform were used by US . industries for va...

Application of Supercritical Fluid ‎Technology for Preparation of Drug Loaded ‎Solid Lipid Nanoparticles

Small changes in pressure or temperature, close to the critical point, lead to large changes in solubility of supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2). Environmentally friendly supercritical CO2 is the most popular and inexpensive solvent which has been used for preparation of nanodrugs and nanocarriers in drug delivery system with supercritical fluid technology. Delivery...

Decontamination of Uranium-Contaminated Soil Sand Using Supercritical CO2 with a TBP–HNO3 Complex

An environmentally friendly decontamination process for uranium-contaminated soil sand is proposed. The process uses supercritical CO2 as the cleaning solvent and a TBP–HNO3 complex as the reagent. Four types of samples (sea sand and coarse, medium, and fine soil sand) were artificially contaminated with uranium. The effects of the amount of the reagent, sand type, and elapsed time after the pr...

Reactions in supercritical fluids. A case study of the thermodynamic solvent effects on a Diels—Alder reaction in supercritical carbon dioxide

The fundamental aspects of chemical reaction kinetics at near-critical conditions are discussed within the framework of transition state theory and the thermodynamics of critical phenomena for multicomponent systems. This discussion emphasizes the geometric analysis of Griffiths and Wheeler which describes the manner in which various thermodynamic properties behave on approaching mixture critic...

Integrated Supercritical Fluid Extraction and Bioprocessing

Supercritical fluids are increasingly being used and promoted at a laboratory and pilot scale to produce high value, natural bioactives from biologically based raw materials. Supercritical CO2 is overwhelmingly the solvent of choice for these operations, but is largely limited to the processing of dry raw materials and the extraction of low polarity, low molecular weight compounds. The use of c...
